Gojal

GOJJAL Limestone, historically known as shell stone, is amarine limestone rock composed of fossilized mollusk shells and sand. Used for over 3,000 years, this unique stone played a pivotal role in rebuilding the ancient city of Hvar and remained the primary building material until 1960. This marine-phase calcareous rock consists predominantly of the shells of mollusks, including laminagills and gastropods, which are tightly bonded by calcite mineral glue. Macroscopically, GOJJAL Limestone exhibits a highly porous structure, characterized by layers of shells embedded within microcrystalline calcite.
