HVAR
The HVAR stone, or shell stone according to the ancients, is a marine limestone rock composed of shells and sand. It was used 3,000 years ago to rebuild the ancient city of HVAR and was the main building material until 1960. A marine-phase calcareous rock consisting of the shells of mainly molluscs (laminatogills and gastropods), which have been strongly bonded with calcite mineral glue. Its appearance is very porous, while, when examined macroscopically, it shows piles of shells, with some mineral glue of microcrystalline calcite.
